Darkroom Hire

I have done some searched for a local darkroom that we could hire to film our film opening and I found a company called Rapid Eye that offer student discounts!

I also looked into how long it would take for us to travel to the darkroom on the Transport For London website and it estimated 22 minuets on the number 23 bus

Thriller Planning: The Name

We decided to name our film 'The Collector' as we were inspired by the novel with the same name. It is called The Collector as the male character likes to collect butterflies. The genre of the novel is thriller and we  chose this name as it is about a man who is obsessed with a girl and stalks her everyday. He then abducts her and keeps her captive in his isolated house in the countryside. He thinks that by keeping her there she will grow to love him but she doesn't understand his plot. The girl ends up dying and  the man wants to commit suicide but he reads her diary and learns that she never loved him, so he ends up planning to kidnap another girl.
We chose to name our film after this novel as it related to our idea. Our opening will be about a male stalker who is obsessed with a girl. He also keeps a diary like the female character in the novel but instead of just diary entries, he does sketches, notes and he also likes to take a lot of photographs. The name also shows that the male character in our film opening likes to 'collect girls' as he is psychologically and mentally ill.

Thriller Planning: Film openings

We looked at different film openings including the work of previous students. We focused on discreet openings like Blasphemy, The paper trail, 'Se7en' and 'Memento'.

Thriller Planning sheet

Thriller Planning

We started to look at the different fonts that would suit our psychological thriller. We went on the website DaFont to look at their various fonts. We decided to look at fonts which looked handwritten as our opening will show a man writing diary entries.

We also looked at the key props that we might use in our opening such as camera films, photographs and a diary.

Film Opening Inspiration: Memento

The film opening of Memento is about a murder but is filmed in an unusual way which creates suspense and keeps the audience engaged. We like this film opening because of the amount extreme close ups of the props and the characters because it isn't a cliche murder film which makes it interesting.  This type of filming creates suspense which is conveyed to the audience efficiently which we also want to achieve for our own opening. For own film opening we want to create suspense and tension while also making the audience think about what will happen next but surprising them by choosing the opposite. During this film opening we find out that it is actually rewinding from the picture of the murder to the character holding the gun with a loaded bullet. This created a suspense and kept the audience interested as it made the audience want to watch more. I think momento could be a great role model for our own movie as it has achieved what we aim to, which is to create suspense to engage the audience and also surprise them with a twist that isn't expected.

Film Opening Inspiration: 'Se7en'

We are starting to think about what kind of film openings we might like to use for our own movie opening. We have seen loads of film openings during our media lessons and in our spear time and we all came to the same conclusion. We all like the film opening 'Se7en' which is a discrete layout with loads of extreme close up shots brought together with special effects and unusual film titles. This type of film opening would suit our group because it requires minimal acting which we seem to be reluctant to do and loads of editing which everyone is getting accustomed to.  We are aware that this type of film opening would be hard to make but we are confident that we can be successful if we put some effort and time into this project.

Preliminary Evaluation

We had to do a preliminary exercise where we had to film a clip that consisted of  a match cut and a shot reverse shot. We had to also make sure that we didn't break the 180 degree rule. The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline in filmmaking that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship. The camera should not cross the imaginary line or otherwise it would be a reverse shot. In our clip we managed to keep within the rule however we didn't get a shot reverse shot.

We also did not get any over the shoulder shots because we had a lot of face to face conversation in our video. The over the shoulder shots could have been implemented in to our video but it was hard to film it and we wasn't sure if we could do it without breaking the 180 degrees rule. If we did added shot/reverse shots in our movie it would have made our film more interesting and created even more tension.

On a whole we are extremely happy with our film because of how it keeps the audience engaged and how the dialogue sounded within the movie. The props we used like the Glasses case and the £50 notes was the right props to use in our film and it made it look more authentic. If we could have made the film again we would have taken the risk and added the shot reverse shots as it would have been beneficial for the film, because it could have raised the tension between the two characters and could have made it easier for the the audience to understand and feel the tension.

Preliminary Exercise

This is our finished video for our preliminary exercise.

Our Preliminary film video is about an encounter between 2 people exchanging items for money. This was the films plot for our film but we also added extra depth by hints of the history between the 2 characters and their dislike of each other in the dialogue. The Genre for this film was a thriller but we also tried to implement  sub genre of espionage with the item being sold secretly and discreetly, which we wanted to create tension and keep our audience engaged.

Here are some of the pictures from the filmping process and the props we used.

Preliminary - Sound

For this exercise we also needed some dialogue between 2 characters which we edited in and made it louder and clearer because the mic on the videocamera couldn't record some sounds properly while  filming the video. The added sound which was edited in at the end helped to create an effect of authenticity because if the actions caught on the video camera didn't have any sounds it would have been confusing to the Audience.

This is an image of the editing process that we used to fix some of the sounds which wasn't picked up by the mic properly. We change the length and the pitch by extending the sounds in some areas to make it clearer by reducing it or taking it out altogether in others. This on a whole allowed our preliminary film opening to create the effects of tension that made our film more interesting for the viewers.

Preliminary- Editing

Preliminary Match Cut Exercise

For this exercise we had to create a film sequence with some speech dialogues about a character opening a door but trying to make sure we used at least one match cut and a shot/reverse shot. We also had to make sure that we followed the 180 degrees rule in filming, which states that the character cannot change from one angle of the camera to an opposite angle which would confuse the audience because it wouldn't make sense if the character suddenly moved from one place to another.

This is our editing process where we had to trim our individual clips with the in and out function on final cut pro and put them back together in order.

After we finished our editing of the clips we added some titles like the name of the film and to follow the rules of conventions of a film opening.

After we added in the title our editing process was finished.

Preliminary Match cut exercise- Planning

The brief of todays lesson was to film a sequence that included shot reverse shots and match cuts. First we had to plan and do a storyboard of our shots. We had to come up with our own scenario and write the script.

For the Dialogue we had to develop a script for our characters. We used a sub genre of espionage in the form of exchanging itens for money.

Character 1: Long time no see, i figured you'd be here for the exchange.

Character 2: What are you doing here ? i thought i left you in germany ?

Character 1: Well it seems you were wrong. Its not surprising considering its you.

Character 2: You here for the object ? Its going to cost you allot ?

Character 1: Well ive got the money!

Character 2: Im not even going to ask where you got all that from.

[ Exchanging objects]

Character 1: Its a pleasure doing business with you.

Arlington road

We had to re-edit the opening of Arlington Road, then add titles in the correct sequence.  After that we experimented with adding foley sound.

Research: Foley Sound

Foley sound

Foley sounds are reproducing everyday sounds for film makings. During filming cameras usually capture the actors dialogue clearly while small sounds like movements or scenery sounds are missed out. This is when foley is used to recreate the small sounds which are missed out by using artificial methods. These are some commonly created foley sounds :

A pair of gloves can create a sound of birds flapping there wings
A heavy Nail gun can create the sound of gun shots
An Old chair can make creaking sounds
A Heavy phone book can make body punching sounds

For our arlington road project we also had to record sounds to add to our re-edited 'Arlington Road' opening scene. To find the sounds we had to go outside and we chose to stay within the area our college is located. We went to a quiet road where there were few traffic sounds as the street in the opening looked fairly quiet with only a few cars passing by. We also walked up to Regent's canal and thought it was a good location to shoot the opening of a thriller film.

This is one of the locations we chose to film the background sounds such as footsteps, rustling of leaves, cars etc.

This is Shantelle recording Onur's footsteps.

We went to the canal to record the sound of water dripping.

We also had to get the sound of someone running.

This is the canal where we captured the water dripping sound for our arlington road project. While were at the canal we thought that it would be a good location to shoot the opening of a thriller film in.  The place was quiet with only a few people walking through and it looked dark we also thought it was quite scary to be in when its dark.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a term referencing parts of other films and implementing them in other movies. This allows movies to create a similar feel for the movie and increase its chance of becoming popular by adding similar aspects of a scene from another movie in your own movie.  In the movie psycho there was a famous shower scene which had distinctive aspects that proved to make the scene popular, which was copied by various other films.

Psycho:

This movie provided material for other movies to use to help create suspense and increase its chance of being sucesfull. Here are some materials from the scene which are usually referenced:

  • The Knife
  • The Bathroom tiles
  • The Shower
  • The bath
  • The stabbing motion
  • Dieing with back toward the wall
  • Shower curtain being pulled
  • Falling outside the bath.
These aspects of the scenes are famous and set the heights for thriller movies which has been used in loads of recent films as it indefinably works and is popular.

Previous Student Film Openings

I liked the film opening to Signature, it is a gril applying her makeup while water from the bath drips and a rubber duck is floating in the water. At the end of the film opening a hand appears in the bath, the girl pushes back the shower curtain and a dead boy appears floating in the bath, the girl then tightens his tie. The credits are position in between clips on a black screen in a calligraphy font like a signature.

Sound Water dripping, High Vibrations noise and Low unedgy sound

Editing Clean cuts, fade to black, fuzzed

Mis en Scene White clean bathroom, Bright room, the girl was young: up to date fashion, the boy smartly dressed

Camera Panning of the room, close ups, birds eye, medium shot, extreme close up, over the shoulder, low angle

The only negative in this film opening is that the film title is positioned at the end of the opening instead of the beginning.

Different Structured Film Openings

There are 3 basic film opening structures, these are:

A narrative opening has the titles running through out. An example of a narative opening is the film Panic Room. We know its a narrative opening as the film introduces us to the character and the location. It also does not include any SFX alongside the title.

A discrete opening does not give any information about the film such as the character of location. An example of a discrete opening is Enemy of State. We know its a discrete opening as it has effects such as opacity reduced to reveal one clip under the other, colour filter and graphics. It also included edits such as time manipulations as shots changed.

A stylised edit is opening that contains a lot of SFX. An example of a stylised edit opeing is The Taking of Pelham 123. We know its a stylised edit because it contains SFX that match the films storyline e.g. the black strip running other the words like a train. The location and characters are also shown.

Intertextuality

Intertexuality is a term used to describe the visual reference between films. This is used to create a similar feel to the movie by adding parts of a famous popular scene form an popular film to its own movie, which increases the chances of the movie getting a wider audience. An example 0f intertexuality, take the film Psycho, there was a famous shower scene, other films took the aspects of the scene and used it in their own film, for example the film What Lies Beneath and Fatal Attraction.

The famous shower scene in the film Psycho, there is a woman having a shower and a murderer comes in and stabs her to death several times, leaving her dead hanind out of the bath. The main elements form this scene was:
  • The knife
  • A female victim
  • The white bath, shower, white shower curtains, robs and tiles
  • Running shower
  • Ripping shower curtains
  • Shower curtains pulled down
  • Sliding down the wall
  • The stabbing motion
  • Falling outside the bath tube
  • Victim left in the bath
  • Dead with open eyes
  • Violin strings
The film What Lies Beneath, in the shower scene, there is a man who wants to kill his wife, he drugs her to unconsciousness and he is trying to drown her in the bat. The intertexuality form Psycho is used in this scene, A female victim, the same white curtains, shower, bath, tiles, running shower and a bath robe.

The film Fatal Attraction, in the shower scene is a love triangle where the mistress is trying to kill the husband’s wife so she can have the husband for herself, but the husband ends up killing the mistress. The intertexuality from Psycho is used in this scene, a female victim, the same white shower, tiles, curtains, bath, rode, running shower, ripping shower curtains and the dead open eyed victim

Research: Film Audiences

Film audiences are the most important factor in making a film, the audiences are the customers who pay to watch the film or buy it on DVD, all the money comes from the audiences. There are many audiences who enjoy watching different genres and sub genres. A film is not for everyone, each film made has a different target audience. The film makers have to make a film genre, which most people enjoy watching, to make more profit. Thriller movies are one of the most popular genres to the film audience, as it can create a wonderful films, you can use it as one genre on its own, or use it as a sub-genre and create a wider target audience, by combining it with another genre. Thriller films can be enjoyed by everyone, but it is mostly aimed at teenagers to young adults, as they enjoy tension and suspense. Thriller movies slight male skew but sometimes can change if added a sub-genre. The thriller audience is slightly has more of a male skew, and mostly aimed at people aged 20-50, but that depends on the sub-genre.

Action thrillers: Action thrillers have more of a male skew, because men are seen to enjoy violence, guns, explosions and bombs. For example the film DEJA VU, is an action thriller aimed at males aged 15-33. On the poster we can see an explosion which shows the audience that the film is an action film. Also we see the main actor Denzel Washington, who mostly is featured in an action thriller film.

Romantic thriller: Romantic thrillers have more of a female skew, because women are usually seen to enjoy romance. For example the film OBSESSED, we can see that there is love and romance between Idris Elba and Beyoncé. Also at the back we can see Ali Larter, who looks jealous, you can tell from her face expression.

Supernatural thriller: Supernatural thrillers have more of a female skew, because woman are seen to like children and supernatural films usually have children in it, women are thought to have maternal feelings. For example the film The ORFANATO, on the poster we see a woman who looks like nurse holding a baby, also there are hands of little children reaching to the woman, which represents supernatural.

Psychological thriller: Psychological thrillers have a male and female skew, because a psychological genre needs more of a mature mind. For example the film MEMENTO, we can see on the poster there is a man in a picture, who looks a bit worried, this called show us that the man is being watched as he might have some psychological problems.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a term used to describe visual referencing between films. An example of intertextuality is from the film Psycho which aspepcts of its shower scene has been borrowed for other films such as What Lies Beneath, Fatal Attraction and the Stepfather.

In the film Psycho a woman is taking a shower and a murderer comes in and stabs her several times, leaving her dead hanging out of the bath. during this scene the shower is running the whole time. The main elements from this film were:

  • A female victim
  • Running shower
  • Violin strings
  • White shower curtain, shower, tiles and robe
  • Round headed shower head
  • Pointed knife
  • Ripping shower curtain
  • Sliding down the wall
  • Victim left in the bathtub
  • Dead opened eyed victim

In a shower scene for the film What Lies Beneath, a doctor who wants to kill his wife drugs her to unconsciousness and is trying to drown her in the bath to make it look like a accident. Intertextuality from Psycho that has been put into this film is the female victim, the same white shower curtain ,tiles and shower head, bath robe the same running shower and  violin sound.

The shower scene from the film Fatal Attraction is about a love triangle where the mistress is trying to kill the wife but the husband end up killing the mistress. Intertextuality from Psycho that has been put into this film is the female victim, the same white shower curtain ,tiles and shower head, bath robe, ripping of shower curtain, the same running shower and the open eyes of the victim.

In the shower scene from The Stepfather, the stepfather is trying to kill his wife but in the end the wife ends up stabbing him. Intertextuality from Psycho that has been put into this film is the female victim, the same white shower curtain ,tiles and shower head, bath robe, ripping of shower curtain, the same running shower and dies in the bath

.

Film Audiences

Thriller movie audiences usually have a slight male skew but can sometimes vary with a sub genre for example;

Action thriller is more of a male skew as men are seen to like violence, guns and bombs more than women. An example of a action thriller would be Deja vu, in the poster we can see it is targeted at men because of the actor Denzel Washington, who is usually featured in this type of genre. In the poster there is a explosion which shows violence.

File:Elorfanato.jpgRomance thriller has more of a female skew because women are usually seen to like romance and emotions. An example of a romance thriller is Obsessed, in the poster there is a obvious romance between Idris Elba and Beyonce Knowles but then there is also a jealousy from Ali Larter. It is obvious that Ali Larter's character is jealous from her facial expression and as she is wearing red which could represent the devil.

Supernatural thriller has more of a female skew because supernatural films usually have children in so it would women are thought to have maternal feelings. An example of a supernatural thriller is The Orphanage. In the poster there is a women holding a baby who appears to be a nurse. There is also little children hands reaching towards the women which suggest maternal references.
Psychological thriller has a male and female skew as this genre needs more of a mature and intellectual mind. An example of a psychological thriller is Momento.

Overall the thriller audience is slightly male skew and tends to be 25- 45 year old but depends on the sub genre.

Audience Reasearch

Audience types

Film audiences are an important factor which influences the way the film is made because they are the consumer who pay to watch the film or buy DVDs which provide the money to the film industry to carry on making movies. There are many different audiences who like different genres and sub genres which the film makers have to take into consideration as they will be the main targets that the film have to appeal to. Thriller is very popular with the audiences because of its versatility as it can create great movies on its own or become a sub genre and great more depth by becoming integrated with other genres. Most film audiences can potentially enjoy thriller movies but it is usually aimed at teenagers to young adults who enjoy suspense and tension, where as other types of film genres are aimed at older people who prefer deep plots.

Here are types of thriller films :

The sixth sense was a popular thriller film about ghosts.

The Batman was a popular thriller film about a vigilante.

Thriller films always tend to do extremely well in the box office as it has a large target audience.

Genre and Sub Genre

Genre is a way of categorizing films, shows the audience what sort of film it is, and also shows us some of the tool which we would see in the film, e.g in a Action film we mostly expect to see bomb explosions, guns, chasing and so on. The Genre also shows us what the film is about, e.g of a thew genres, Thriller, Horror, Comedy, Action, Romance, Adventure and many more. The genre of a films helps the audiences decide in what film they want to watch. The genre of a film also gives us a hint of what age group the film is for, for example if a film's genre is horror, you wouldn't let a child watch that film, they could get nightmares, you would only watch it if you are in the target age group, and if you enjoy horror films. The genre of a film is also useful for the Institutions because, it gives a set of tools and conventions for the makers, the genre can also help them market the film, for example, a horror film, they could realise the film on October(Halloween), the film will fit the concept or atmosphere of Halloween.

Sub Genre is a sub category of a genre, so its the same thing as genre, but its just an extra genre added to the film, so for example an action comedy film, this film is mostly action and also is a comedy film. Having a sub genre, its sort of like watching a action and a comedy film at the same time. Having a sub genre, makes the film more interesting to the audiences, the film appeals to a wider target audience.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Poster

Some films can have more then one sub genre, for example Nightmare on Elm Street is a Horror, Drama and a Thriller film. Looking at the poster of Nightmare on Elm Street, you can tell that the film is going to be a Horror film.

Research: Genre, Subgenre and audiences

In today's lesson we looked at the definition of genre and how films fit into the specific genres by looking at the key signifiers. A GENRE is a way of categorizing films e.g. Thriller, Action, Romance, Comedy, Horror etc. Genres are useful for Institiutions because it gives a set of tools and conventions for the film makers. It also helps them to market the film. Genre helps audiences so it is easier for them to decide and watch a film of their genre choice. Thriller audiences overall are male from the age of 25 to 45 however it does depend on the subgenre. A SUBGENRE is a subcategory within a particular genre e.g. Psychological thriller, Romantic comedies, Action adventure etc. Today we focused on Thrillers as that is the genre we will be categorizing our films in.

We looked at:
  • Action Thrillers
  • Supernatural Thrillers
  • Psychological Thrillers
  • Romance Thrillers

We looked at the film 'The Others' as it was a Supernatural Thriller. The poster is very dark and the character's facial expression shows that she is hiding or scared of something. At first i thought it was a horror film but the typical conventions of a horror film poster would be bloody.  The target audience of this film is young adults from the age of 15 to 25. Supernatural Thrillers are mainly watched by females as males tend to go for Action.

This film is an example of an Action/Crime Thriller. The title of the film which is 'Fair Game' shows that it is an action and the word 'spy' is also written underneath the title. The target audience of this subgenre would be males from the age of 25 to 45 . This is a film that needs to be concentrated on in order to understand the plot.

This film is an example of a Romantic Thriller. We watched the opening of this film in order to see the key aspects that make this a romantic thriller. However there wasn't anything that signifies it is also a thriller. The Target audience for films like this would be females from the age of 18 to 25.

'Memento' is a Psychological thriller. This subgenre has a target audience of both females and males from the age of 18 to 30. We looked at the opening of this film and the camera shots and editing gave the subgenre away. The close ups of the characters face, the photo in  his hand, the slow editing and the fact that the film was going backwards showed us that it is a Psychological thriller.

Genre and Sub Genres

A Genre is a way of categorising films e.g. thriller, horror and action. Genre is useful for institutions because it gives a set of tools and conventions for the makers. It also helps to market the film. Genre helps audiences decide what film they want to see.

A Sub Genre is is a sub category of a particular genre e.g. Action Adventure, Rom Com or Thriller Horror.

In class we looked at different sub genres of Thriller:
  • Action Thriller e,g, Fair Game. Deja vu
  • Supernatural Thriller e.g. The Orphanage. The Others
  • Psychological Thriller e.g. Momento

File:Elorfanato.jpg

I like the psychological thriller sub genre the most. The Orphanage inspired me the most because I like that it has the basic aspects of a psychological thriller. These include young children,  it is set in a big house that is usually connected with being haunted and it is set in the past around the 1940's (this is apparent from the clothing).

crop image

Crop image
I also liked how the names appeared on the screen as a girl rips off wallpaper. I liked how the credit graphics links to the film as the wallpaper  suits the era that it is set in.

The Orphanage would help my film opening by making me think what basic aspects I need to include so that my opening has the conventions of a thriller. It has also has helped me on how i'm going to show my credits.

Genres and Sub Genres

Genre & Sub Genres

Genre in the film and media industry is a way of categorising different types of films by using their plot similarities like if the movie is a type Thriller, Action or an horrors. There are many types of genres in film but it doesn't need to be one or another but can be combined by adding a sub genre. Sub genres are used to create depth in the movie by having 2 genres working together like for e.g Action / Comedy.

Genres & Sub Genres are particularly useful for institutions because:
  • It Allows the film makers to cater to specific audiences to increase the chances of  the film becoming popular.
  • Its Increases the chances of people finding the movies as the genre acts like a contents page by making it easier for the audience to find the movie.
  • It Also gives the film makers a set of tools and conventions to make the film and help market it.
  • Genres would also help the audience to come to a decision to what movies a person would like to see.
My favroite type of genre is action type movies with some thriller. Action movies takes up a considerate amount of the box office as it can cater to the majority of audiences. Action movies also tends to be a big production movie because of the budget needed  to make car chases or  bombs scenes or just sheer destruction which creates bucket loads of suspence and keeps everyone interested. I also enjoy action movies because it can easily become a sub genre and can be intergrated into any type of movies like comedies or horrors.

Here is a picture from the movie Die hard which is an action genre and a popular movie:

Research- Title Sequence Analysis

In our group we had to analyse a title sequence. The title sequence we analysed was 'The Taking of Pelham 123'. We presented our findings on a worksheet. We looked at the conventions of title sequences. In every opening of a film there is:
  • A Production company ident
  • Production company presents
  • Distribution
  • Production team
  • A film by
  • Main Actors
  • Title of the film
  • Supporting Actors
  • Casting
  • Costume designer
  • Music
  • Co executive producer
  • Editor
  • Production designer
  • Director of Photography
  • Executive producer
  • Produced by
  • Director

In the title sequence we analysed all the titles were there apart from the director.
