Genres and Sub Genres

Genre & Sub Genres

Genre in the film and media industry is a way of categorising different types of films by using their plot similarities like if the movie is a type Thriller, Action or an horrors. There are many types of genres in film but it doesn't need to be one or another but can be combined by adding a sub genre. Sub genres are used to create depth in the movie by having 2 genres working together like for e.g Action / Comedy.

Genres & Sub Genres are particularly useful for institutions because:
  • It Allows the film makers to cater to specific audiences to increase the chances of  the film becoming popular.
  • Its Increases the chances of people finding the movies as the genre acts like a contents page by making it easier for the audience to find the movie.
  • It Also gives the film makers a set of tools and conventions to make the film and help market it.
  • Genres would also help the audience to come to a decision to what movies a person would like to see.
My favroite type of genre is action type movies with some thriller. Action movies takes up a considerate amount of the box office as it can cater to the majority of audiences. Action movies also tends to be a big production movie because of the budget needed  to make car chases or  bombs scenes or just sheer destruction which creates bucket loads of suspence and keeps everyone interested. I also enjoy action movies because it can easily become a sub genre and can be intergrated into any type of movies like comedies or horrors.

Here is a picture from the movie Die hard which is an action genre and a popular movie:
