Intertextuality

Intertextuality is a term used to describe visual referencing between films. An example of intertextuality is from the film Psycho which aspepcts of its shower scene has been borrowed for other films such as What Lies Beneath, Fatal Attraction and the Stepfather.




In the film Psycho a woman is taking a shower and a murderer comes in and stabs her several times, leaving her dead hanging out of the bath. during this scene the shower is running the whole time. The main elements from this film were:

  • A female victim
  • Running shower
  • Violin strings
  • White shower curtain, shower, tiles and robe
  • Round headed shower head
  • Pointed knife
  • Ripping shower curtain
  • Sliding down the wall
  • Victim left in the bathtub
  • Dead opened eyed victim



In a shower scene for the film What Lies Beneath, a doctor who wants to kill his wife drugs her to unconsciousness and is trying to drown her in the bath to make it look like a accident. Intertextuality from Psycho that has been put into this film is the female victim, the same white shower curtain ,tiles and shower head, bath robe the same running shower and  violin sound. 



The shower scene from the film Fatal Attraction is about a love triangle where the mistress is trying to kill the wife but the husband end up killing the mistress. Intertextuality from Psycho that has been put into this film is the female victim, the same white shower curtain ,tiles and shower head, bath robe, ripping of shower curtain, the same running shower and the open eyes of the victim.


In the shower scene from The Stepfather, the stepfather is trying to kill his wife but in the end the wife ends up stabbing him. Intertextuality from Psycho that has been put into this film is the female victim, the same white shower curtain ,tiles and shower head, bath robe, ripping of shower curtain, the same running shower and dies in the bath
