Research: Foley Sound

Foley sound

Foley sounds are reproducing everyday sounds for film makings. During filming cameras usually capture the actors dialogue clearly while small sounds like movements or scenery sounds are missed out. This is when foley is used to recreate the small sounds which are missed out by using artificial methods. These are some commonly created foley sounds :

A pair of gloves can create a sound of birds flapping there wings
A heavy Nail gun can create the sound of gun shots
An Old chair can make creaking sounds
A Heavy phone book can make body punching sounds

For our arlington road project we also had to record sounds to add to our re-edited 'Arlington Road' opening scene. To find the sounds we had to go outside and we chose to stay within the area our college is located. We went to a quiet road where there were few traffic sounds as the street in the opening looked fairly quiet with only a few cars passing by. We also walked up to Regent's canal and thought it was a good location to shoot the opening of a thriller film.

This is one of the locations we chose to film the background sounds such as footsteps, rustling of leaves, cars etc.

This is Shantelle recording Onur's footsteps.

We went to the canal to record the sound of water dripping.

We also had to get the sound of someone running.

This is the canal where we captured the water dripping sound for our arlington road project. While were at the canal we thought that it would be a good location to shoot the opening of a thriller film in.  The place was quiet with only a few people walking through and it looked dark we also thought it was quite scary to be in when its dark.
