Genre and Sub Genres

A Genre is a way of categorising films e.g. thriller, horror and action. Genre is useful for institutions because it gives a set of tools and conventions for the makers. It also helps to market the film. Genre helps audiences decide what film they want to see.

A Sub Genre is is a sub category of a particular genre e.g. Action Adventure, Rom Com or Thriller Horror.

In class we looked at different sub genres of Thriller:
  • Action Thriller e,g, Fair Game. Deja vu
  • Supernatural Thriller e.g. The Orphanage. The Others
  • Psychological Thriller e.g. Momento

I like the psychological thriller sub genre the most. The Orphanage inspired me the most because I like that it has the basic aspects of a psychological thriller. These include young children,  it is set in a big house that is usually connected with being haunted and it is set in the past around the 1940's (this is apparent from the clothing).

I also liked how the names appeared on the screen as a girl rips off wallpaper. I liked how the credit graphics links to the film as the wallpaper  suits the era that it is set in.

The Orphanage would help my film opening by making me think what basic aspects I need to include so that my opening has the conventions of a thriller. It has also has helped me on how i'm going to show my credits.
